One person has been confirmed dead while three others have been rescued following the collapse of a two-storey building under construction in the Fadeyi area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, with emergency responders continuing search-and-rescue operations amid fears that additional workers may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call at about 12:10 am, prompting the immediate deployment of its Cobra Response Team from the Onipanu base.
According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the team arrived at the scene two minutes later and discovered that the building had collapsed, with construction workers suspected to be trapped underneath.
Rescue operations began immediately, with emergency personnel deploying an excavator to help clear the debris and reach possible survivors.
Oke-Osanyintolu disclosed that responders heard groaning sounds beneath the rubble during the operation, raising hopes that other victims could still be alive.
The three rescued men received emergency medical attention from LASEMA paramedics and the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being transferred to hospital for further treatment.
The operation involved LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS and police officers.
Authorities have yet to establish the cause of the collapse, saying relevant regulatory agencies would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about construction safety and compliance with building regulations in Lagos, as emergency workers continue efforts to locate anyone who may remain trapped.
