A Nigerian technology company is making estate planning more accessible by introducing a digital platform that allows individuals to prepare and manage their Wills online, helping them safeguard their assets and protect their families’ interests.
The initiative seeks to address the reluctance among many Nigerians to prepare Wills, often because of misconceptions that the process is complicated, expensive or meant only for wealthy individuals and older people.
The platform enables users to organise information about their assets, identify beneficiaries and document how their properties and other possessions should be distributed after their death.
By simplifying the preparation process, the technology aims to encourage more Nigerians to plan ahead and reduce the uncertainty and family disputes that can arise when a person dies without leaving clear instructions.
Estate planning experts have repeatedly stressed that having a Will can help individuals communicate their wishes and provide greater clarity for surviving family members. Without one, the distribution of an estate may be governed by applicable inheritance laws, potentially resulting in lengthy disputes and delays.
However, preparing a Will online does not necessarily mean the document is legally valid without further steps. Nigerians using digital Will-writing services must comply with applicable legal requirements, including the necessary signing and witnessing procedures.
The growing adoption of digital solutions in estate planning reflects a broader effort to use technology to simplify traditional services and improve access to them.
The development is expected to contribute to greater awareness of the importance of estate planning, particularly among young adults, business owners, property holders and individuals with dependants.
