Businessman and social media influencer Afolabi Michael Kazeem, popularly known as KC Luxury, appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday in an ambulance while receiving oxygen, as his lawyer renewed efforts to secure his release on medical grounds.
A nurse attending to Kazeem at the Police Hospital, Falomo, Lagos, told Justice Musa Kakaki that the defendant was too ill to be brought into the courtroom.
The nurse, Bukki Yahya, said Kazeem was admitted to the hospital on October 7 and diagnosed with asthma and sepsis.
Following the medical report, the judge directed that Kazeem be taken back to the hospital.
His lawyer, Emefo Etudo, subsequently proceeded with a bail application seeking his release to obtain specialised medical treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).
The defence counsel told the court that his client’s condition had deteriorated, alleging that he had suffered a lung collapse and required specialist care that the Police Hospital could not provide.
Etudo further alleged that Kazeem was taken away from LUTH to a correctional facility on October 13 despite his medical condition. According to the lawyer, his client’s health worsened during the journey, forcing those accompanying him to return him to the Police Hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
However, prosecution counsel Abu Ibrahim opposed the bail application, arguing that the medical evidence presented by the defence did not sufficiently justify the defendant’s release.
The prosecutor also maintained that the court had previously considered Kazeem’s medical condition and described him as a potential flight risk. He urged the judge to reject the application or impose stringent conditions if bail was granted.
In response, Etudo appealed for bail on liberal terms, assuring the court that his client would attend future proceedings. He added that Kazeem’s international passport was already in the custody of the authorities.
Kazeem is standing trial alongside Boniface Freeman Ochoche Sule and Ikechukwu Ekugo Patriarch over alleged cocaine trafficking and money laundering.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) accused the defendants of conspiring to export 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine to the United Kingdom and engaging in money laundering. The defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Justice Kakaki adjourned the hearing to October 28, 2026, for a ruling on the fresh bail application.
