Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has warned Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde against making remarks he considers disrespectful to President Bola Tinubu, declaring that he will respond to anyone who insults the Nigerian leader.
Igboho made the statement in a viral video while criticising Makinde over his recent demonstration of physical stamina at a political gathering in Akure, Ondo State.
The activist described the governor’s actions as disrespectful, arguing that political disagreements should not be used as an opportunity to ridicule the President.
Igboho Criticises Makinde’s Stage Jump
The controversy began when Makinde jumped down from a stage during a South-West town hall meeting linked to his 2027 presidential ambition.
The governor, who is associated with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), challenged presidential hopefuls to demonstrate their physical energy, arguing that voters should consider candidates’ stamina rather than focusing solely on their age.
Although Makinde did not directly mention Tinubu during the demonstration, some observers interpreted the challenge as an indirect reference to the President’s age and physical ability.
Reacting to the incident, Igboho accused Makinde of mocking Tinubu and condemned what he viewed as an attempt to compare the governor’s physical performance with that of the President.
“He was jumping around like a frog and a madman, insulting Tinubu,” Igboho said in the video.
He added: “If you insult Tinubu, I will insult you back.”
Activist Calls for Respect for Tinubu
Igboho also argued that the President deserved respect because of his age, warning political figures against making statements he considered insulting.
The activist described Makinde’s conduct as disgraceful and maintained that political ambition should not justify disrespect towards others.
His remarks have added to the ongoing debate surrounding Makinde’s demonstration and the wider discussion about age, physical fitness and leadership ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Political Tensions Build Ahead of 2027
The exchange comes as political activities intensify ahead of the next general election, with political figures increasingly using public engagements to communicate their positions and distinguish themselves from potential rivals.
Makinde’s demonstration has drawn attention to the question of how presidential candidates should be assessed, while Igboho’s response highlights the sensitivity surrounding public comments about Tinubu.
However, Makinde did not explicitly identify Tinubu as the target of his challenge, and his stated argument centred on candidates demonstrating their physical energy.
The disagreement is the latest development in the political conversations surrounding the 2027 election, as politicians and supporters continue to debate leadership, age and public accountability.
