The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has reached its climax, with Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal emerging as the leading contenders ahead of Monday night’s award ceremony in London.

The 70th edition of football’s prestigious individual award will recognise the outstanding performers of the 2025/26 season, with the winner set to be announced at the London Palladium.

Kane, the Bayern Munich and England striker, enters the ceremony as the bookmakers’ favourite after an exceptional goalscoring campaign. However, Mbappé and Yamal remain serious challengers, each presenting a strong case for the honour.

Kane’s goalscoring exploits strengthen his case

Kane enjoyed a prolific season, recording 73 goals for club and country, including 61 for Bayern Munich and 12 for England.

The England captain helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga and German Cup titles while also claiming the European Golden Shoe for the second time.

His remarkable scoring record has strengthened his chances of becoming the first Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.

Despite his impressive domestic achievements, Bayern’s Champions League semi-final exit and England’s World Cup semi-final defeat could influence how voters assess his campaign.

Kane has acknowledged that winning the award would be a major milestone in his career, although he has remained cautious about his chances.

Mbappé brings individual brilliance

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé is another major contender following a season filled with individual milestones.

The Frenchman scored 58 goals for club and country, finished as La Liga’s leading scorer with 25 goals and topped the Champions League scoring chart with 15.

He also won the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals at the tournament.

However, the absence of a major team trophy for either Real Madrid or France could count against him in a contest where collective success is also considered.

Yamal hopes to make history

Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal completes the leading trio after another impressive season.

The 19-year-old registered 25 goals and 20 assists, underlining his influence in Barcelona’s attack. His creativity, dribbling ability and performances on the biggest stages have made him one of football’s most exciting young talents.

Yamal also helped Spain win the World Cup, adding another major achievement to his growing list of honours.

A victory would make him the youngest-ever Ballon d’Or winner, giving the Barcelona star an opportunity to create history.
Who will take home the trophy?

With Kane’s extraordinary scoring numbers, Mbappé’s individual achievements and Yamal’s creativity and international success, the final outcome remains a major talking point among football fans.

The winner will be decided through the Ballon d’Or voting process, which considers individual performances, team achievements and sporting conduct during the season.

Football supporters will discover whether Kane ends England’s long wait for another winner, Mbappé claims the prize after another prolific campaign, or Yamal announces himself as the sport’s youngest recipient.
