Suspected gunmen have killed prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Ibrahim Masussuka and his associate in an attack outside the preacher’s residence in Dutsin-Ma Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident occurred on Monday night, October 26, 2026, when two armed men reportedly riding on a motorcycle opened fire on the victims before fleeing the scene.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the deaths, stating that both men sustained fatal gunshot injuries. They were reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital but were pronounced dead by a medical doctor.

The cleric’s associate was identified as Adamu Abubakar.

Police Launch Investigation

Following the attack, the Commissioner of Police in Katsina State, Ali Umar Fage, ordered the deployment of tactical and operational teams to track down the assailants.

The police said investigations had commenced, while security operatives intensified efforts to identify and arrest those responsible.

As of Tuesday, no arrests had been announced, and authorities had not established the motive behind the killing.

Who Was Sheikh Masussuka?

Sheikh Masussuka was an Islamic preacher originally from Bauchi State who was based in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State. He was known for his Quran-centred teachings, promotion of peaceful coexistence and advocacy against violent extremism.

His religious teachings, particularly his rejection of certain Hadith traditions, had reportedly generated disagreements with some other Islamic scholars.

The cleric had also reportedly received threats over his religious views, a matter that has drawn renewed attention following his death. However, authorities have not confirmed any connection between the earlier threats and the fatal attack.

Governor Radda, Amnesty International Condemn Killing

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The governor described the late cleric as a voice for peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony, while urging residents to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist security agencies.

Amnesty International also condemned the killing and called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and prosecute the perpetrators.

The killing has raised fresh concerns about security in Katsina State, where residents have continued to face threats from armed groups.

Authorities have pledged to pursue the investigation as the community mourns the cleric and his associate.
