Nigerian music executive and Mavin Records founder Don Jazzy has opened up about the risks involved in discovering and managing musical talent, saying not every artiste signed to his record label will achieve international fame.

The music producer, whose real name is Michael Collins Ajereh, made the disclosure during a livestream conversation with popular forex trader Habby Forex, where he compared the uncertainties of the music industry with the risks associated with foreign exchange trading.

According to Don Jazzy, signing an artiste is an investment that does not always translate into commercial success or global recognition.

‘Music Business Also Involves Risks’

Don Jazzy explained that although music remains his primary focus, the industry comes with uncertainties that make it impossible to guarantee the success of every artiste.

He noted that, just like forex trading, the music business involves risks, as some investments may not produce the expected financial returns.

“The forex market is just something I do for fun. Music still takes most of my time, and my other businesses are not as volatile and risky as the forex market,” he said.

The Mavin Records boss stressed that he does not measure an artiste’s success solely by international recognition or the amount of money they generate for the label.

Personal Growth Also Counts as Success

Don Jazzy maintained that an artiste’s improvement in talent and professional development should also be considered when assessing their progress.

He explained that an artiste who becomes better at their craft over time has achieved something meaningful, even if they do not become a global superstar.

“But not every artist I signed will become global. Just like in trading, there is risk in the music business, too. But to us, as long as you are better today than yesterday as an artist, you are a success,” he added.

His comments highlight the challenges record labels face when investing in emerging musicians, particularly in an industry where commercial performance and public recognition can be unpredictable.

Don Jazzy’s Track Record in the Music Industry

Over the years, Don Jazzy has played a significant role in the development of several Nigerian music stars through his work as a producer and record label executive.

Mavin Records has been associated with the careers of artistes including Rema, Ayra Starr and other performers who have built audiences beyond Nigeria.

His latest remarks offer insight into the realities behind talent discovery and artist management, emphasising that success involves more than signing a contract or securing a record deal.
