Nigerian music executive Don Jazzy has sparked heated debate online following the announcement of his 2027 technology scholarship programme, with critics questioning why beneficiaries are still expected to pay an application fee.
The initiative, launched in partnership with TS Academy, is designed to help Nigerians acquire digital skills through tuition support of up to 100 per cent, with advertised course fees valued at as much as ₦447,000.
The programme covers several fields, including artificial intelligence and automation, data analytics, cybersecurity, software development, digital marketing, product design and content creation.
Other advertised benefits include 50 laptops for selected beneficiaries and internet data support for up to 500 students, subject to eligibility and available resources.
However, the application fee has become the main source of controversy, with some social media users questioning whether the programme should be described as a scholarship if recipients must still pay to enrol.
Reports indicate that the standard application fee is around ₦26,500, although successful scholarship applicants are expected to receive a discount. The exact discounted amount has not been clearly stated in the main scholarship announcement.
Critics argue that applicants should be given a clear breakdown of all charges before applying, insisting that the term “scholarship” could create the impression that the entire learning process is free.
Others have defended Don Jazzy and the academy, arguing that discounted tuition can still make technology education more accessible, while an application fee may help encourage commitment among participants.
The debate has also raised broader questions about transparency in scholarship programmes promoted by celebrities and influencers, particularly when financial obligations remain after tuition support is awarded.
Applications for the Don Jazzy Tech Scholarship 2027 are reportedly open until November 30, 2026. Interested applicants are advised to review the terms carefully and confirm the total amount payable before making any payment.
