The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has called for the postponement of a DNA test scheduled to determine the paternity of his son, Liam, demanding full disclosure of the United States laboratory expected to analyse the samples.
The family said the proposed arrangements raised questions about transparency, compliance with a court order and the safeguards required to ensure that the examination produces a credible and scientifically reliable result.
In a statement signed by the family head, Samuel Aloba, the family requested that the exercise, scheduled for Saturday, October 31, 2026, at Mainland General Hospital/IDH in Yaba, Lagos, be put on hold until its concerns are addressed.
Family Questions Plan to Send Samples Abroad
The Aloba family said a court order issued on May 5, 2026, designated the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre to conduct the examination.
However, reports that biological samples would be collected in Lagos and sent to an undisclosed laboratory in the United States for analysis prompted the family to question whether the designated centre would perform the actual test or merely collect and dispatch the samples overseas.
The family argued that any arrangement that materially differs from the one contemplated by the court order should be properly explained and, where necessary, referred to the court for clarification.
It maintained that all parties involved in the legal dispute were entitled to understand how the court’s directive would be implemented.
Demands Laboratory Details and Safety Measures
Among its requests, the family called for the full name and address of the proposed US laboratory, evidence of its accreditation and technical competence, and detailed information about the testing procedures.
It also demanded documentation showing how the samples would be collected, labelled, preserved, transported and examined.
The family further insisted that a reliable mechanism must be established to confirm that the samples collected in Lagos are the same specimens eventually received and analysed by the overseas laboratory.
According to the family, these safeguards are necessary to protect the integrity of the examination and ensure that its findings can withstand independent scientific and judicial scrutiny.
The family also expressed concern over reports that the laboratory’s identity might be disclosed only to the court, arguing that confidentiality should not prevent meaningful verification of a process with significant legal and personal consequences.
Previous Concerns Over Post-Mortem Samples
The family also revisited questions surrounding the handling of biological samples during the post-mortem examination conducted following Mohbad’s death.
It claimed that enquiries made by the family suggested that the laboratory to which samples from the earlier process were reportedly sent had not received any specimen registered in the singer’s name.
However, the family acknowledged that the claim reflected information obtained through its own enquiries and was not an established court finding or independently verified proof of wrongdoing.
It also stressed that its concerns about the proposed DNA test should not be interpreted as evidence that the process had already been manipulated or compromised.
Family Insists It Supports a Credible DNA Test
Despite its objections, the Aloba family maintained that it supports a scientifically valid DNA examination to resolve the dispute over Liam’s paternity.
It said its request for postponement was intended to ensure that the process was transparent, properly documented and conducted in accordance with the court’s directions.
The family called on the relevant authorities to address the outstanding questions, provide adequate notice to all parties and their legal representatives, and obtain further judicial directions where necessary before proceeding.
The dispute over Liam’s paternity has remained a sensitive issue following Mohbad’s death on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.
The latest development adds another layer to the prolonged legal dispute, with the family insisting that the credibility of the eventual result depends not only on the outcome but also on the transparency and reliability of the process used to obtain it.
