Nigerian troops have launched a manhunt for armed men who attacked a military checkpoint in Plateau State, killing a soldier and escaping with weapons.
The attack occurred at about 8pm on Saturday at the Sopp checkpoint in Ungwan Boka, Riyom Local Government Area, where soldiers serving under Operation Enduring Peace were on duty.
Security sources said the attackers opened fire on the troops from different directions, triggering a gun battle before they fled into nearby bushes.
One soldier was killed during the incident, while two weapons were reportedly taken by the assailants.
Confirming the development in Jos on Sunday, the spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Oteh, described the incident as a deliberate and unprovoked assault on military personnel.
Oteh said troops had restored normalcy in the affected community and intensified operations to track down the perpetrators and recover the stolen weapons.
He added that security personnel had heightened their vigilance to prevent further attacks and reassure residents of their safety.
The military spokesperson urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in apprehending those responsible.
Residents who spoke about the incident condemned the killing, describing it as an attack on personnel deployed to protect their community. They called on the military to ensure the perpetrators were arrested.
The incident has renewed concerns over the security situation in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State, where communities have experienced recurring attacks, kidnappings and other violent incidents.
Security operations are continuing in the area as troops intensify efforts to bring those behind the attack to justice.
