The Federal Government has approved a new pensionable salary structure for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with Generals, Admirals and Air Chief Marshals now having pensionable earnings of up to N29.75 million annually.

The new structure, approved by President Bola Tinubu, takes effect from September 1, 2026, following a review by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

Under the revised structure, the highest pensionable salary for Generals, Admirals and Air Chief Marshals is N29,745,561 annually, equivalent to about N2.48 million monthly when calculated on a monthly basis. The lowest figure for officers at the rank is N21,898,443 annually.

Lieutenant Generals, Vice Admirals and Air Marshals will have annual pensionable salaries ranging from N16.99 million to N25.91 million, while Major Generals, Rear Admirals and Air Vice Marshals will receive pensionable salaries between N14.98 million and N23.90 million annually.

For Brigadier Generals, Commodores and Air Commodores, the approved annual pensionable salary ranges from N13.86 million to N16.39 million.

Other ranks will also benefit from the revised pensionable salary structure, with the approved figures varying according to rank and salary step.

The commission, however, clarified that the figures are specifically for pension purposes and should not be interpreted as the monthly take-home salaries of serving military personnel.

The review is based on the revised Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure and was carried out in line with Section 173(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides for the review of pensions.
