Several communities in Oghara Kingdom, Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, have been hit by severe flooding following persistent rainfall, leaving homes submerged and residents struggling to cope with the damage.
The affected communities, Oghareki and Ogharefe, have recorded significant flooding, with residents wading through water and attempting to salvage belongings from inundated homes.
The situation has disrupted normal activities and left vulnerable families appealing for urgent assistance from the government and other well-meaning individuals.
Residents said the continuous rainfall had worsened the flooding, with water entering homes and making movement increasingly difficult.
Youth Leader of Uduaka Community, Friday Ofotokun, described the situation as difficult, saying many residents were struggling to deal with the effects of the prolonged rainfall.
He appealed for broader intervention, noting that some families had lost the comfort of their homes and were finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the situation.
The flooding has also affected children and families who have been forced to navigate muddy and contaminated water around their homes and neighbourhoods.
Amid the hardship, an Oghara community volunteer and Senior Special Assistant to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Political Matters, Avwerosuoghene Iyah, mobilized assistance for some of the affected residents.
Iyah, who was reportedly outside the state when he saw images of the flooding circulating on social media, arranged for relief to be delivered to vulnerable families rather than waiting until his return.
His representatives distributed N20,000 each to 15 families, bringing the total cash assistance to N300,000.
The intervention provided temporary relief for beneficiaries dealing with losses caused by the flooding.
One of the beneficiaries, Dennis Akpori, expressed appreciation for the assistance, saying it came at a time when affected families were experiencing serious hardship.
Another beneficiary, Okpako Precious, also thanked Iyah for remembering residents during the difficult period.
Community leaders, however, stressed that individual assistance alone would not be sufficient to address the scale of the problem.
Ofotokun called for greater intervention from government agencies and other individuals, particularly as some residents were struggling to secure safe accommodation and protect their belongings.
The flooding has once again highlighted concerns over drainage and development practices in flood-prone communities.
Iyah, through his representatives, sympathized with the affected families and urged residents to avoid activities that could worsen flooding.
He specifically cautioned against building on waterways and blocking drainage channels, practices that can restrict the movement of stormwater and increase the risk of flooding.
The current situation has left residents seeking longer-term solutions beyond emergency relief.
While the cash assistance has provided some immediate support, community members are calling for measures capable of reducing the impact of future rainfall, including improved drainage and stronger flood-management interventions.
The flooding in Oghara comes amid recurring concerns about the effects of heavy rainfall on communities across parts of the Niger Delta, where low-lying settlements and inadequate drainage can increase residents’ vulnerability.
For families affected in Oghareki and Ogharefe, however, the immediate priority remains finding ways to cope with damaged homes, lost property and the disruption caused by the rising waters.
Residents are therefore urging government authorities and other stakeholders to respond urgently and provide broader assistance as the rains continue.
