Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the alleged obstruction of his convoy during a visit to Benue State, describing the incident as unacceptable.
Obi was in the state on Tuesday to sympathise with communities affected by recent killings and visit families who lost loved ones in the violence.
His convoy was reportedly stopped along the Boko Road near the Air Force Base shortly after arriving in Benue, preventing him from reaching the community where he intended to pay his respects.
Speaking at the scene, Obi said he was informed that youths allegedly backed by the state governor had blocked the road and were preventing his movement.
He questioned why a political figure visiting communities affected by violence would be prevented from offering condolences.
Obi expressed frustration over the development, saying such conduct was inconsistent with the kind of country Nigerians should aspire to build.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed that officers had been deployed to provide security for Obi and his entourage. However, the police said the reason the youths blocked the convoy was not immediately known and that an investigation had commenced.
The Benue State Government also said it was unaware of Obi’s visit, with an official stating that the government had not received formal notification of the planned trip.
The incident has sparked fresh political reactions, coming as activities and tensions surrounding preparations for the 2027 general elections continue to increase.
