The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on Nigerians to support its 2027 election campaign through small voluntary donations, saying ordinary citizens should have a role in funding the party’s political activities.
The party said supporters could contribute amounts such as ₦1,000 or ₦2,000 as part of a grassroots funding model intended to reduce reliance on wealthy individuals and political financiers.
The NDC said the approach would allow Nigerians who believe in its political agenda to contribute directly to the campaign and help build the party’s structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s position comes as political parties intensify preparations for the elections and seek ways to finance nationwide campaigns and mobilisation activities.
The NDC argued that political funding should not be restricted to wealthy individuals, saying ordinary citizens should also be able to participate in supporting candidates and programmes they believe in.
The party said its proposed funding model was designed to give Nigerians a greater sense of ownership of the political process.
It also maintained that transparent contributions from supporters could provide an alternative to dependence on established political financiers.
The NDC is positioning itself as an opposition platform ahead of the 2027 elections and has been working to expand its membership and organisational structures across the country.
The party said it would continue to engage Nigerians at the grassroots while seeking the financial and organisational support required to contest elections at various levels.
The call for small donations is part of the party’s broader effort to build a campaign structure supported by members, supporters and ordinary Nigerians rather than relying primarily on a few wealthy sponsors.
The NDC said the initiative was aimed at ensuring that Nigerians who want political change can contribute to the process, regardless of the size of their financial resources.
