Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has ordered the immediate arrest of anyone found to be involved in the killing of his political associate, Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade.
Oyeyemi was reportedly shot dead on Sunday at Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife during a dispute linked to the control and leadership of the park. The incident has heightened tension in parts of the state.
Confirming the shooting, the Osun State Police Command said its operatives were deployed to the area after receiving reports of the incident. The command said preliminary investigations established that Oyeyemi had been shot and that efforts were underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify those responsible.
Adeleke, through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, directed the Commissioner of Police to ensure that everyone connected to the killing is arrested and brought to justice.
The governor also ordered rival groups involved in the motor park dispute to immediately leave the parks and garages across the state.
As part of efforts to prevent further violence, Adeleke announced plans to reintroduce a Park Management System to oversee motor parks and garages in Osun. He said an Executive Order would soon be issued to provide the legal framework for the new arrangement.
The governor appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that security agencies had been instructed to restore normalcy and maintain law and order across the state.
Oyeyemi, who was associated with the governor and was a member of the Accord Party, was also involved in transport-related activities in Osun. His killing occurred against the backdrop of a prolonged dispute among rival groups over the management and control of motor parks.
The latest incident comes weeks after Adeleke suspended activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state following violence connected to the leadership crisis within the union.
Police authorities have commenced investigations into the latest shooting and said anyone found culpable would face the law.
