A former councillor in Benue State, Daniel Ujah, has been remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre following his arraignment over allegations of assault and attempted culpable homicide.
Ujah, 43, who previously represented Awume-Icho Ward in Ohimini Local Government Area, was brought before the Upper Area Court 2 in Otukpo by the Nigeria Police.
The former councillor is facing charges including criminal trespass, intimidation, criminal force and assault, causing grievous hurt, as well as an alleged attempt to commit culpable homicide.
The case reportedly followed an incident involving a woman, with the allegations against Ujah prompting the police to bring him before the court.
After considering the matter, the court ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Otukpo Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The development has attracted attention in the state, particularly because of Ujah’s previous position as an elected local government representative.
The allegations remain unproven unless established by the court, as the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Further proceedings in the case are expected to determine the next steps in the prosecution of the former councillor.
