Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has explained his approach to squad rotation after Chuba Akpom was left out of the team’s matchday squad last weekend.

Akpom, who joined Ipswich from Ajax during the summer, was not involved in the club’s recent Premier League encounter, prompting questions about his availability and position within the manager’s plans.

O’Neil, however, indicated that the decision was part of his broader strategy to manage a squad containing several attacking options.

The Ipswich boss stressed that players would not necessarily feature in every match as he looks to keep the squad fresh and make tactical decisions based on each opponent.

Akpom’s omission comes as Ipswich prepare for a demanding period, with Arsenal among the sides on their schedule.

The Nigerian-eligible forward has added experience and versatility to Ipswich’s attack since arriving at the club, having previously played for Arsenal and several other European sides.

His ability to operate across the frontline gives O’Neil another option as he considers how best to approach matches against stronger opposition.

Ipswich’s manager is expected to make further changes depending on the fitness, form and tactical requirements of individual players, with competition for places increasing within the squad.

The upcoming meeting with Arsenal will provide another opportunity for Akpom to push for involvement if selected.

The Tractor Boys will be looking to build on their recent performances and maintain their momentum as they face one of the Premier League’s leading sides.

For Akpom, the Arsenal fixture could carry added significance given his previous association with the north London club, where he came through the academy before embarking on a career that has taken him across several clubs in England and Europe.
