The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, has called on people in Northern Nigeria to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.
Yari made the appeal in Lagos while leading members of the APC campaign council to the palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, as part of consultations ahead of the election.
The former Zamfara State governor argued that the North should reciprocate the support he said Tinubu gave former President Muhammadu Buhari during the 2019 presidential election.
According to Yari, Tinubu resisted pressure within the APC to challenge Buhari for the party’s presidential ticket in 2019, maintaining that it was the North’s turn to produce the president.
Yari said Tinubu subsequently supported Buhari’s re-election and remained committed to the former president’s campaign.
He argued that this history provided a basis for northern political stakeholders to support Tinubu’s second-term ambition in 2027.
Yari also pointed to what he described as the achievements of the Tinubu administration, saying the President had embarked on significant reforms despite inheriting difficult conditions from previous governments.
However, he stressed that the campaign council’s position was not based exclusively on the principle of power rotation between the North and South.
Rather, he said the council was also seeking another term for Tinubu because it believed Nigerians would want the President to continue implementing his policies.
The senator representing Zamfara West assured Tinubu that political leaders in the North would work to mobilise support for his re-election bid.
The campaign council’s Lagos visit formed part of its wider engagements with traditional and political leaders as parties and candidates intensify preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
The comments have added to the growing political debate over regional support, power rotation and the performance of the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 poll.
