President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over the death of veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, describing him as a major figure in Nigeria’s creative industry.
Jacobs died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at the age of 84. His death was announced by his family, who described him as the “Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to the public to respect their privacy as they mourn.
In his condolence message, Tinubu acknowledged Jacobs’ decades-long contribution to theatre, television and film, noting his influence on Nigeria’s entertainment industry and his role in inspiring generations of performers.
The President extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and other members of the family, as well as colleagues and admirers of the late actor.
Jacobs built a career spanning more than five decades. After training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, he worked in British theatre and television and appeared in international films before returning to Nigeria, where he became one of the most recognisable figures in Nollywood.
His career earned him several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011 and the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013.
Beyond acting, Jacobs and Joke Silva were involved in the development of Nigeria’s performing arts through the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
His death has prompted tributes from political leaders, actors and other members of Nigeria’s creative community, with many recalling his influence on the development of the country’s film and theatre industries.
The family has asked the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect its privacy during the mourning period.
