Lecturers at Kaduna State University have suspended their industrial action after the Kaduna State Government approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities agreement for academic staff of the institution.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU chapter, announced the suspension after its congress reviewed and accepted the measures approved by the state government, the university’s Governing Council and its management.
The suspension took effect from 12:01am on Friday, September 18, 2026, paving the way for academic activities to resume at the university.
The union’s chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, and secretary, Silas Bakut, disclosed the decision in a statement issued after the congress meeting held at the university on Thursday.
New salary structure begins in October
Under the agreement approved by Governor Uba Sani, the implementation and domestication of the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement for KASU academic staff will commence with the October 2026 salary.
The approved package covers the revised Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), as well as other applicable salary adjustments and allowances contained in the agreement.
The development followed the recommendations of a nine-member Government-KASU/ASUU Negotiation Committee established by the state government to examine the lecturers’ demands and develop a framework for implementing the agreement.
Nine months’ arrears approved
In addition to the new salary structure, the university’s Governing Council and management approved the payment of nine months of accrued arrears covering January to September 2026.
The union described the approvals as important steps towards resolving the dispute and restoring stability at the university.
ASUU-KASU said the measures would improve staff welfare, support the retention of academic personnel and enhance productivity within the institution.
The union consequently resolved unanimously to suspend the strike after considering the commitments made by the government and university authorities.
Strike followed unresolved welfare issues
The latest strike followed a series of disagreements over the implementation of salary adjustments, allowances and other conditions of service.
The union had previously embarked on a two-week warning strike over issues including salaries, earned academic allowances, university autonomy and promotion arrears.
The state government had earlier approved a N300 million one-off payment for Earned Academic Allowance as part of efforts to address a backlog of accumulated entitlements.
Despite that intervention, ASUU-KASU proceeded with an indefinite strike while negotiations continued.
Union commends Kaduna government
Following the latest approvals, the lecturers commended Governor Uba Sani, the university’s Governing Council and management for their roles in resolving the dispute.
The union particularly praised the government’s negotiation team for what it described as its commitment and prompt attention to the issues raised.
ASUU-KASU also said the negotiations were conducted without threats or intimidation, allowing the union to follow its established procedures throughout the dispute.
With the strike now suspended, the union said it looked forward to welcoming students back to the classrooms and restoring normal academic activities at Kaduna State University.
The development brings an end, for now, to the latest industrial dispute between KASU lecturers and the Kaduna State Government, with the implementation of the approved agreement and payment of arrears expected to be closely watched by the university community.
