The Chief of Training of the Nigerian Navy, Rear Admiral Abdulrasheed Haruna, has urged graduating cadets of the Nigerian Defence Academy to uphold democratic principles and protect Nigeria’s national interests as they begin their military careers.
Haruna gave the charge on Wednesday during the Beating of the Retreat and prize-giving ceremony held at the RSM Oliver Nzalgana Parade Ground, Afaka, Kaduna State.
Representing the Navy at the event, Haruna commended the Nigerian Defence Academy for its continued efforts to train officers capable of protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He urged the cadets to remain disciplined, vigilant and focused as they prepare for commissioning into the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The Navy chief also encouraged the graduating officers to play meaningful roles in addressing the changing security challenges facing Nigeria and its allied countries.
He emphasised the importance of discipline, vigilance and dedication to duty, while reminding the cadets of their obligation to respect the Constitution and democratic values.
The NDA Commandant, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, similarly charged the graduating cadets to carry the values and discipline acquired during their training into their military careers.
The ceremony also featured awards recognising outstanding performances during the 2025/2026 training cycle.
Mogadishu Battalion emerged as the Champion Battalion after securing five trophies, while Collito Company of Ashanti Battalion was named Champion Company.
Other awards were presented to cadets who distinguished themselves in activities including drills, sports, judo and taekwondo.
A combat march demonstration and the traditional Beating of the Retreat by the combined band also formed part of the ceremony.
