The media office of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has criticised Vice-President Kashim Shettima over his description of the politician as “diminished”, accusing him of applying different standards when dealing with opposition leaders.

The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR), through its spokesperson, Idris Zekeri Jnr, said Shettima’s comments fell short of the standards of political decency expected of someone occupying the office of Vice-President.

The reaction followed remarks by Shettima at the unveiling of the campaign headquarters of Arewa for Asiwaju, a northern political coalition backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

While expressing confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Vice-President said he was not afraid of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party or a “diminished Peter Obi”, adding that internal divisions within his party posed a greater threat.

Shettima also urged supporters to defeat former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar at the polls but insisted that they should do so respectfully.

Reacting, Obi’s media office questioned why Shettima would advocate respect for Atiku while making remarks it considered dismissive of Obi.

The office maintained that political disagreements should not be an excuse for personal attacks, insisting that opposition figures deserved equal respect regardless of their political affiliations.

It also challenged Shettima to compare their records in office, noting that both men had served as governors of Anambra and Borno states, respectively.

According to the media office, Obi’s administration recorded achievements in fiscal management, education and healthcare, which it said distinguished his tenure.

It urged the Vice-President to present verifiable evidence if he disputed Obi’s record rather than resorting to political name-calling.

The statement also criticised some South-East politicians for allegedly showing disrespect towards Obi because of their political differences, urging them not to allow party loyalty to override mutual respect.

POMR insisted that Nigeria’s political discourse should focus on policies, governance records and practical solutions to the country’s challenges rather than personal attacks.

The office further maintained that Obi’s political relevance would ultimately be determined by Nigerian voters, not by the remarks of political opponents.
