El-Rufai’s Detention: Could It Hurt APC or Strengthen ADC Ahead of 2027?

The continued detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has sparked fresh debate over its possible political implications for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

El-Rufai, who was once a prominent member of the APC, fell out with the ruling party before joining the opposition ADC. He had pledged to help mobilise support, particularly in northern Nigeria, to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

However, his ongoing legal battles involving the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) have restricted his political activities.

ADC leaders have alleged that the Federal Government intends to keep El-Rufai in detention until after the 2027 elections, arguing that his continued absence could weaken the opposition coalition. The allegation remains the party’s position and has not been established as a proven government plan.

Could the detention benefit the APC?

Political analyst Jide Ojo believes El-Rufai’s detention or eventual release may have little impact on the APC’s electoral fortunes, arguing that the former governor’s political influence has declined.

Ojo pointed to El-Rufai’s strained relationship with Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and the political developments in the state as factors that could limit his ability to mobilise support for the opposition.

He also argued that the ADC had yet to demonstrate that it could attract a substantial number of serving political officeholders capable of strengthening its electoral position.

According to the analyst, the APC’s strategy in northern Nigeria, including its relationships with influential political figures and its campaign planning, could prove more consequential than El-Rufai’s detention alone.

Could it strengthen the ADC instead?

Despite Ojo’s assessment, the controversy presents a potential opportunity for the ADC to portray El-Rufai’s case as an example of political persecution.

If voters perceive his detention as politically motivated rather than a legitimate part of ongoing investigations and court proceedings, it could generate sympathy for the former governor and the wider opposition.

The ADC has already raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his continued detention, while insisting that it does not oppose the prosecution of anyone with a legitimate case to answer.

However, the opposition would still need to convert public sympathy into tangible electoral support through effective mobilisation, a credible campaign and a convincing policy agenda.

The bigger question ahead of 2027

El-Rufai’s political future is closely tied to the broader contest between the APC and the opposition coalition. His influence in northern Nigeria, his relationship with other opposition figures and the outcome of his legal battles could all shape his role in the months ahead.

Ultimately, whether his detention benefits the ruling party or strengthens the opposition will depend on how Nigerians interpret the case, the credibility of the legal process and the ability of both political camps to win voters’ trust.

For now, the political consequences remain uncertain, with competing assessments of El-Rufai’s current influence and the opposition’s ability to challenge the APC in 2027.
