A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.

The judgment was delivered nearly two years after the incident, which occurred at New Bra-Bra Estate in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

Musa was arrested on 4 January 2024, following the death of his wife, and was subsequently charged with culpable homicide.

According to details of the incident, the police received a distress call at about 4:48 am on the day of the killing. The couple were reportedly on the same bed when Mamman was attacked with a sharp object to the neck, resulting in severe bleeding that led to her death.

Following the incident, the police arrested Musa for questioning, while officers attached to the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Court Finds Prosecution Proved Its Case

During the trial at High Court 1 in Damaturu, the prosecution presented evidence in support of the charge against the defendant.

The court reportedly ruled that the prosecution had established the case of culpable homicide beyond reasonable doubt, leading to Musa’s conviction and subsequent death sentence.

However, the convict retains the right to appeal the judgment within the period permitted by law.

Deceased Was a University Staff Member

Mamman’s death also attracted reactions from the academic community, as she was a staff member of Yobe State University.

Following her death in January 2024, the university’s management expressed grief over the incident and called on security agencies to ensure that justice was served.

She was buried in Potiskum on 9 January 2024.

The Women-led Civil Society Organizations Network in Yobe State also condemned the killing and called for justice, identifying Mamman as a volunteer with one of its member organizations.

Governor Mai Mala Buni equally expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and urged security agencies to ensure that anyone responsible was brought to justice.

The court’s ruling marks a major development in the case, although the legal process may continue if the convict exercises his right of appeal.
