Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), according to an announcement by his son, Bashir El-Rufai.

Bashir disclosed the development in a post on his X account, expressing gratitude to supporters who stood by the family during the former governor’s detention.

He described his father’s detention as unlawful and criticised the anti-corruption agency over its handling of the matter.

El-Rufai had been in ICPC custody since February 2026 over allegations relating to financial misconduct and other offences.

The former governor was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Kaduna alongside a co-defendant in a case involving alleged financial crimes. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

His reported release came hours after the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, in Cairo, Egypt. Subsequent reports indicated that the ICPC granted him temporary release on compassionate grounds to enable him to attend her funeral.

At the time of the initial announcement, the commission had not publicly detailed the terms of his release.

El-Rufai is also facing separate legal proceedings relating to allegations of unlawful interception of telephone communications involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu. He has denied wrongdoing in the cases against him.

The circumstances surrounding his release and the status of the ongoing legal proceedings remain matters of public interest.
