Security agencies and electoral officials in Plateau State have met with political parties and other stakeholders to discuss measures to prevent violence and ensure peaceful conduct of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting brought together representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant organisations to address potential security threats as political activities gather momentum.

During the engagement in Jos, Plateau State, the Commissioner of Police, Ayodeji Faniyan, urged political parties and their supporters to avoid actions capable of triggering violence before, during and after the elections.

He stressed the need for cooperation among political actors, security agencies and electoral officials to safeguard the electoral process.

The police commissioner also called on party leaders to discourage hate speech, inflammatory remarks and the spread of misinformation, warning that such activities could heighten tensions in communities.

INEC’s Plateau State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Samuel Egwu, emphasised the importance of credible elections and urged political parties to comply with electoral guidelines.

He noted that cooperation between the commission and security agencies would be essential to creating a safe environment for voters, candidates and electoral personnel.

Representatives of the security agencies also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, while calling on political parties to conduct their activities peacefully.

The meeting comes as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections, with concerns over insecurity and political tension prompting calls for stronger coordination among agencies responsible for electoral safety.

Stakeholders stressed that preventing electoral violence would require collective responsibility, timely information-sharing and strict adherence to the law by all participants.
