APC Fires Back at Tinubu’s Critics Over Poverty, Says President Never Promised to End It

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration over persistent poverty in Nigeria, arguing that the President never promised to completely eradicate poverty.

The party’s reaction comes amid renewed debate over the rising cost of living, food affordability and the economic difficulties confronting millions of Nigerians.

The APC maintained that the administration’s policies should be assessed within the broader context of its economic reform agenda rather than through claims that it had promised to eliminate poverty entirely.

The controversy has intensified following concerns raised by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, who warned that the average Nigerian’s income was increasingly insufficient to meet family food needs.

APC Defends Tinubu’s Economic Direction

The ruling party pushed back against attempts to use the continuing hardship faced by households as evidence that the administration had failed to fulfil a promise to eradicate poverty.

According to the APC’s position, the President did not make an undertaking to end poverty completely, although his administration has presented economic reforms as necessary steps towards improving Nigeria’s economic conditions.

The party’s response has added to the debate over the government’s responsibility to address the effects of inflation, rising food prices and pressure on household incomes.

Nigerians Continue to Face Cost-of-Living Pressures

Despite the government’s defence, food affordability remains a major concern for households struggling to balance earnings against the cost of essential goods and services.

For many families, higher food prices mean difficult choices about household spending, including reducing consumption, purchasing cheaper alternatives or cutting expenditure on other necessities.

The debate also highlights the distinction between reducing poverty as a policy objective and eliminating it entirely. While governments may introduce measures intended to improve incomes and living standards, the effectiveness of those policies depends on their implementation and measurable outcomes.

Poverty Debate Puts Economic Reforms Under Scrutiny

The APC’s response has reignited discussions about how the Tinubu administration should be assessed as Nigerians continue to experience economic pressures.

Supporters of the government’s reform agenda argue that economic changes require time to produce results, while critics maintain that the immediate effects on household welfare deserve greater attention.

Ultimately, the central issue remains whether government policies can translate into improved purchasing power, more affordable food, employment opportunities and better living conditions for ordinary Nigerians.

As the debate continues, the experiences of households and measurable economic indicators will remain important in assessing progress against poverty and hardship.
