An 18-year-old woman has sparked widespread concern after pleading with authorities not to arrest her husband despite suffering visible injuries in an alleged domestic violence incident that went viral on social media.

The young woman, identified as Chisom, was seen in a circulating video with apparent facial injuries as neighbours confronted the man over allegations that he had repeatedly assaulted her.

In the footage, concerned bystanders accused the man of subjecting his wife to persistent violence, with some expressing fears for her safety. The husband was also seen attempting to pull her towards him during the confrontation.

A subsequent video, recorded at what appeared to be a hospital, showed Chisom pleading with human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu and others not to pursue her husband’s arrest.

She expressed concern that his family would blame her if he were taken into custody, insisting that she wanted to leave the marriage instead.

“Please, I am begging you people. It will be as if it is my fault,” she said, appealing for the man to be spared arrest.

The young woman further expressed regret over the marriage, saying she no longer wanted to remain in the relationship and asking those present to allow her to leave.

Her pleas triggered emotional reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern about her safety and questioning why she appeared reluctant to support legal action despite her injuries.

Several social media users called for urgent intervention, stressing the importance of protecting victims of domestic violence and ensuring they can access appropriate medical, emotional and legal support.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency also acknowledged a social media appeal concerning the incident, stating that it was looking into the matter.

The case has renewed discussions about domestic abuse, the challenges victims face when trying to leave violent relationships, and the need for effective protection and intervention.

While Chisom’s request not to arrest her husband drew attention, advocates have emphasised the importance of prioritising her safety and investigating the allegations.
