Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi has revealed that he once turned down an alleged opportunity to join English football club Chelsea because he believed his future lay in music.
The singer, whose real name is Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, made the revelation during an interview on The Beat 99.9 FM, explaining that he and former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel were associated with the same football academy.
According to Mr Eazi, Chelsea approached him about signing professionally before the club secured Mikel, but he decided against pursuing the opportunity.
He explained that he recognised his passion for music and believed Mikel was more committed to building a career in football.
“Chelsea Football Club approached me to sign before Mikel Obi when we were at the same academy, but I turned them down because I knew I could do music, while my friend Mikel only wanted to play football. So I allowed him to shine,” he said.
How Mr Eazi Chose a Different Path
Mr Eazi eventually established himself in the music industry, becoming known for his distinctive Banku music sound and songs that helped expand his audience across Africa and beyond.
Beyond performing, he founded emPawa Africa, an initiative designed to support emerging African musicians, and ventured into business and investment.
Meanwhile, Mikel went on to enjoy a successful football career, spending 11 years at Chelsea, where he won major honours, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League.
Revelation Sparks Conversations Online
Mr Eazi’s account has attracted attention on social media, with fans discussing the unexpected connection he described between himself and the former Chelsea midfielder.
While some have praised the singer for choosing a path that ultimately brought him success, the specific claim about Chelsea approaching him has not been independently verified by the club.
The revelation has nevertheless prompted conversations about career choices, personal passion and the different paths people take to achieve success.
