Several passengers have been injured after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain, prompting the suspension of rail services linking Madrid with the southern region of Andalusia.
The accident occurred on Wednesday morning, October 28, in the province of Toledo, between the towns of Los Yébenes and Urda.
Spain’s rail infrastructure operator, Adif, confirmed the collision and announced the suspension of traffic on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed railway line while emergency services responded to the incident.
According to reports from the scene, the crash involved a Renfe train and an Iryo train travelling towards Seville. Two carriages reportedly derailed following the collision.
Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, confirmed that passengers had been injured and said local authorities were asked to prepare a sports pavilion to accommodate those affected.
Emergency teams, including firefighters and medical personnel, were deployed to assist passengers and assess the extent of the damage.
Authorities investigate cause of collision
The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, with authorities yet to establish what led to the collision.
The incident has disrupted rail transportation between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia, leaving passengers facing delays and cancellations as emergency operations continue.
The crash comes months after another devastating railway accident in southern Spain in January, which claimed dozens of lives and raised concerns about railway safety.
Authorities are expected to provide further details as rescue operations progress and the investigation advances.
