At just 15, Esther Christian has earned a major educational opportunity after leading a team of young Nigerian debaters to international success, with Abia State Governor Alex Otti announcing a full scholarship for her up to university level.
Christian, who lost her father when she was only four years old, captained the Abia State contingent that represented Nigeria at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar.
The scholarship will be provided through the Alex Otti Foundation, following the team’s impressive performance at the international competition.
Otti announced the sponsorship while receiving the victorious students at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, where he also presented cash rewards to members of the team in recognition of their achievement.
The governor said Christian’s circumstances informed his decision to extend educational support to her, describing the scholarship as an opportunity to help her continue pursuing her academic ambitions despite the challenges she had faced growing up.
The five students who represented Abia State and Nigeria at the championship were each awarded ₦1 million. The governor also approved ₦1.75 million for Abia Model Basic Junior Secondary School, Abayi Umuocham, Osisioma Ngwa, which produced the debate champions.
In addition, Onyinyechi Okonkwo of Ovom Girls Secondary School received ₦1 million for winning a national essay competition, while officials who accompanied the debate team were rewarded with ₦750,000 each.
The Abia delegation distinguished itself at the international championship, winning four major awards, including Best International School Debate Team, Overall Best Team in the Junior Category, Best Debater and Best Leadership.
The team also secured 12 medals and competed against numerous teams from different countries, demonstrating its debating skills and ability to respond to challenging topics under pressure.
According to the Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, Lydia Ezinne Onuoha, the students faced impromptu debate topics and had only 15 minutes to prepare their arguments during the final rounds.
The achievement was attributed to the combined efforts of the students, their coaches, school authorities, parents and education officials who supported their preparation and participation.
During the reception, Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving education through infrastructure development, better learning facilities and increased opportunities for students to excel.
He also approved the team’s request to participate in the 2027 edition of the competition.
For Christian, the scholarship marks a significant milestone in her educational journey, turning an outstanding academic achievement into an opportunity to pursue her dreams without the immediate burden of funding her education.
Her story has also drawn attention to the importance of recognizing young talents and providing opportunities for children to thrive, regardless of the difficulties they have experienced in life.
