Troops of the Nigerian military have reportedly neutralized 44 suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during coordinated offensive operations across Borno State and the Lake Chad area.
The operations, conducted by the Joint Task Force under Operation HADIN KAI, also left several suspected insurgents injured and resulted in the destruction of vehicles, motorcycles and materials believed to be linked to improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Acting Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed the operational successes in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to the military, ground troops engaged suspected terrorist fighters at different locations in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State on October 26, following intelligence reports and surveillance activities.
An assessment of the engagements indicated that 28 suspected terrorists were killed, while six others reportedly sustained injuries.
In a separate operation on October 28, the maritime component of Operation HADIN KAI, operating from the Naval Base Lake Chad in Baga, carried out offensive actions against suspected terrorist positions in the Lake Chad area.
The military said preliminary assessments showed that eight suspected insurgents were neutralized during the operation, while 10 others reportedly suffered varying degrees of injuries.
The operations were followed by an air interdiction mission targeting a suspected terrorist team allegedly preparing to plant improvised explosive devices.
According to the military, the air operation neutralized eight suspected operatives and destroyed their vehicle, motorcycles and IED materials, preventing the group from proceeding with its planned activity.
Captain Goni said the operations formed part of sustained efforts to weaken terrorist networks, restrict their movements and reduce their capacity to launch attacks across Nigeria’s North-East.
He reaffirmed the task force’s commitment to maintaining pressure on armed groups through intelligence-led operations involving ground troops, naval personnel and air support.
The military also urged residents and other members of the public to provide credible and timely information to security agencies to support counter-terrorism operations and improve safety in affected communities.
Borno State remains a major focus of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign against Boko Haram and ISWAP, whose activities have caused years of insecurity and displacement across the North-East.
The latest operations represent another effort by security forces to disrupt the groups’ activities, particularly around Kukawa and the strategically important Lake Chad region.
