Former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has backed efforts by opposition political parties to unite ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that a strong and credible opposition is essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.

Onaiyekan expressed his support after a delegation of opposition party leaders under the G100 Coalition met with him in Abuja to discuss plans for presenting Nigerians with a common political alternative ahead of the next presidential election.

The meeting, held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, came as opposition parties intensified consultations aimed at overcoming their differences and developing a framework for cooperation against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress.

According to a statement issued on behalf of the coalition by Salihu Mohammed Lukman, the delegation briefed the cardinal on its efforts to establish a united opposition front capable of addressing Nigeria’s political and economic challenges.

The coalition reportedly told Onaiyekan that it had completed work on three key documents designed to guide its activities and outline the principles of a possible alliance.

These include the National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, the Framework for Opposition Unity and the National Reform Programme, which sets out the policy direction of a government that could emerge from the proposed cooperation.

Onaiyekan Welcomes Credible Alternatives for Nigerians

The cardinal welcomed the opposition’s efforts, expressing hope that Nigerians would have genuine and credible choices when they head to the polls in 2027.

He stressed the importance of building a strong opposition that could strengthen democratic institutions and give citizens confidence in their ability to influence the country’s future through elections.

Onaiyekan also highlighted the need for competent, honest and compassionate leadership, noting that Nigeria requires leaders capable of addressing the numerous challenges affecting citizens’ welfare and living conditions.

His support comes weeks after he criticized opposition politicians for allowing personal ambitions to undermine attempts to build a common front against Tinubu.

In an earlier interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, the cleric warned that multiple opposition candidates contesting separately could divide votes and give the incumbent president an electoral advantage.

He argued that opposition leaders needed to look beyond individual ambitions and agree on a candidate capable of presenting a credible challenge to the ruling party.

G100 Prepares for Second Summit

The coalition is expected to hold its second summit on November 9, 2026, where participating political parties are expected to consider and endorse the proposed working documents.

The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for party leaders to strengthen cooperation, address potential disagreements and establish mechanisms for managing differences within the alliance.

The coalition has also reported progress in attracting additional political parties and developing arrangements intended to prevent internal disputes from derailing the process.

However, the question of whether major opposition figures will eventually agree to support a single presidential candidate remains a significant challenge.

Several prominent politicians seeking to challenge Tinubu have continued to pursue their ambitions through different political platforms, raising questions about how a unified arrangement would work in practice.

Opposition Faces Pressure to Set Aside Personal Ambitions

The latest intervention by Onaiyekan adds to growing calls for opposition leaders to prioritize national interests over individual political aspirations.

While the coalition’s supporters believe a united front could offer voters a stronger alternative, its success will depend on whether the participating parties can agree on common objectives, policy priorities and a workable political structure.

For the opposition, the challenge is no longer simply about criticizing the Tinubu administration. It is about convincing Nigerians that it can work together, present a credible programme and offer effective leadership.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the coming months are likely to test whether the renewed unity initiative can produce a lasting alliance or become another unsuccessful attempt to consolidate opposition forces.
