Four community vigilantes have been killed after gunmen attacked Shurum village in the Dorowa Babuje district of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The deadly incident reportedly occurred at about 11:56 pm on Friday, October 16, 2026, when the armed attackers stormed the community and targeted the vigilantes who were on duty to protect residents.
A community member, Bulus Bature, confirmed the killings, expressing sadness over the death of those who had volunteered to safeguard their neighbourhood.
Bature lamented that the victims were carrying out their community protection duties when the attackers struck, describing their deaths as painful and distressing for residents.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the incident, saying the organization had received reports that four people were killed.
Tengwong condemned the attack and called on security agencies to investigate the killings and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
He warned that community members who volunteer to protect their people should not continue to face deadly attacks while carrying out their responsibilities.
The association also appealed to the Plateau State Government and relevant security agencies to strengthen security in the affected communities to prevent further violence and reassure residents.
As of the time the report was filed, efforts to obtain confirmation from security operatives had been unsuccessful.
The attack adds to the security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where repeated incidents of violence have left residents worried about their safety.
