European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced plans to leave her position early, saying she wants the freedom to speak openly about issues beyond monetary policy.
Lagarde, who has led the ECB since November 2019 after previously serving as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is expected to step down on 7 February 2027, several months before her tenure was due to end in October 2027.
Explaining her decision, Lagarde said the neutrality required of her current office limits her ability to speak out on wider global issues. She indicated that she no longer felt comfortable remaining silent when she believed important truths were being misrepresented.
