Nollywood actress Habibat Jinadu has opened up about her decision to bleach her skin, revealing that pressure to secure acting roles in the film industry influenced her choice.
The actress explained that she believed her dark complexion and slim physique were limiting her opportunities, prompting her to change her appearance in the hope of attracting more roles.
Jinadu made the revelation during an interview with BBC Yoruba, where she reflected on the personal and professional consequences of her decision.
‘Dark Skin Was Limiting My Chances’
According to the actress, she felt that being dark-skinned and slim made it difficult for her to secure roles in Nollywood at the time.
She said she eventually decided to bleach her skin because she believed it would improve her chances of getting work.
“I bleached my skin because if you were dark-skinned, then you would not get a role. Also, if you were not chubby but slim, you would not get a role,” she explained.
Jinadu said the decision appeared to produce the results she had hoped for, as she began receiving more acting opportunities after changing her complexion.
However, the experience came with unexpected consequences.
People Struggled to Recognise Her
The actress disclosed that her changed appearance made it difficult for some people to recognise her, even when they suspected they had seen her before.
She recalled going out to buy items and hearing people comment that she looked familiar or resembled an actress.
Although she was getting more opportunities, Jinadu admitted that she was not entirely happy with the situation.
“I was not happy with it, but I kept on pushing,” she said.
She also revealed that she began experiencing injuries and skin tears from relatively minor bruises while working on film sets, raising further concerns about the effects of her skin-lightening practices.
Pregnancy Marked a Turning Point
Jinadu said she stopped bleaching her skin after becoming pregnant in 2023.
She explained that she did not continue the practice during pregnancy, but stopping came with another difficult experience: people began insulting her and making negative comments about her appearance.
The actress said the reactions made the situation even more challenging, particularly after she had already endured pressure to alter her natural complexion in pursuit of professional opportunities.
Her account has reignited conversations about colourism, beauty standards and the pressures women face in the entertainment industry.
Renewed Debate Over Beauty Standards in Nollywood
Jinadu’s experience highlights concerns about whether perceptions of skin tone, body size and physical appearance can influence casting decisions and career opportunities.
Her account also raises questions about the personal cost of changing one’s appearance to meet perceived industry expectations.
While skin-lightening practices remain a subject of public debate, health experts have warned that some skin-bleaching products can contain harmful ingredients and may cause skin damage or other complications.
The actress’s revelation has prompted renewed discussion about the need for greater acceptance of different skin tones and body types within the entertainment industry.
