A memorial in Munich, Germany, honouring the victims of the 1958 Manchester United air disaster has been vandalised, with several treasured items stolen from a display case dedicated to those who lost their lives in the tragedy.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation (MMMF) expressed deep sadness over the incident, which reportedly occurred on Monday, October 26, at Manchesterplatz in Munich.

According to reports, the perpetrators smashed the glass display case with a heavy stone before removing commemorative items, including a crystal sculpture and several medals. Among the stolen objects was a crystal trophy previously presented by Manchester United to Munich’s former mayor, Dieter Reiter.

Munich police said the incident was believed to have occurred between 8am and 1pm. Investigations are ongoing, and the motive behind the theft remains unclear.

The memorial commemorates the February 6, 1958, Munich air disaster, one of the darkest moments in Manchester United’s history. The crash claimed 23 lives, including eight players from the English club, as well as other members of the travelling party and passengers.

The team’s aircraft had stopped in Munich to refuel while returning from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade in what was then Yugoslavia. The plane crashed during its attempted take-off, leaving a lasting scar on the club and the football community.

Over the decades, the memorial has become an important place of remembrance for the victims’ families and Manchester United supporters who visit to pay their respects.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation said the incident was particularly distressing because of the site’s significance to those affected by the tragedy and supporters around the world.

Its chairman, Ifty Ahmed, stressed that although the stolen objects and damaged display case represented a painful act of vandalism, the memories and legacy of those who died could not be erased.

Manchester United reportedly offered to cover the cost of repairing the damaged display case. However, the foundation said it would handle the repair expenses itself.

Members of Red Docs Munich, a Bayern Munich supporters’ group involved in caring for the memorial, were also praised for responding quickly. The broken glass was replaced on the same day the damage was discovered.

Mark Salzmann, chairman of Red Docs Munich, said the stolen items held significant historical and sentimental value. The group collects tributes left by supporters and preserves selected pieces at the memorial.

Although the missing objects may be difficult to replace, efforts are being considered to find suitable replacements in collaboration with the foundation.

The theft has caused sadness among supporters who regard the memorial as a symbol of remembrance, solidarity and the enduring friendship between Manchester and Munich.

Authorities are continuing their investigation, with no confirmed motive publicly established.

For Manchester United fans, the incident is a painful reminder that the memorial represents far more than football memorabilia. It preserves the memory of the lives lost in a tragedy that shaped the club’s history and remains deeply felt across generations.
