Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a 100-level female student of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, and shot another person during an attack on an off-campus residential area in Plateau State.
The incidents occurred at about 8:40pm on Saturday in Bokkos Local Government Area, raising fresh concerns over the safety of students living outside the university campus.
A student of the institution, who spoke anonymously, confirmed the abduction, explaining that the victim had gone out with another female student when the attackers seized her.
The student expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the area and appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to locate the missing undergraduate and secure her safe return.
A university staff member also confirmed that the institution had received reports of a shooting in one of the off-campus student residential areas.
According to the staff member, the latest incident was the second reported shooting in the area within four weeks.
Although the attack occurred outside the university premises, the institution’s management expressed concern about the safety of students residing in surrounding communities.
The staff member disclosed that the administration of Vice-Chancellor Professor Shadrack Best had been working to provide safer on-campus accommodation for students. However, financial constraints currently limit the university’s hostel capacity to about 1,000 students.
The university has nearly 20,000 students, leaving many of them dependent on accommodation outside the campus.
Management said it would continue engaging relevant authorities to improve student accommodation and strengthen security around the institution.
Efforts to obtain comments from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time the report was filed.
The identities of the attackers, their motives and the whereabouts of the abducted student had not been established in the reports available at the time of publication.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger security measures around university communities in Plateau State, particularly in areas where students live beyond the direct protection of campus authorities.
