Popular Kano-based political commentator Ibrahim Khalil, widely known as Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kano State, prompting calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Dan Shagamu, who operated under the name Dan-Shagamu International, was known for his social media commentary on politics, religion and community affairs. His death was reported on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the reported killing and called on the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought to justice.
The rights organization said Shagamu’s body was discovered in a pool of blood at his home and described the incident as a brutal killing. It also expressed concern about what it described as increasing reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the circumstances surrounding the death had not been fully established at the time of reporting. There was also no confirmed evidence linking the killing directly to Shagamu’s political activities or views.
Former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso also reacted to the incident, describing himself as deeply disturbed by Shagamu’s death.
Kwankwaso called for an investigation and urged the authorities to identify those responsible and bring them to justice. He also appealed for stronger protection for opposition voices and other Nigerians who express political opinions.
The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress similarly described the incident as disturbing, saying it raised concerns about public safety, freedom of expression and the broader political environment in the state.
The party called on security agencies to establish what happened and prosecute anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
The death has generated widespread reactions among Shagamu’s followers and residents of Kano, where he had become a familiar voice through his online political commentary.
His death comes at a politically sensitive period, with parties and political actors already mobilizing ahead of the 2027 elections. Amnesty International’s warning about politically related threats has consequently added a broader dimension to calls for an investigation.
