The Federal Government has awarded a major contract for the reconstruction and dredging of the Escravos Channel at Warri Port in Delta State, as part of efforts to rehabilitate and modernise Nigeria’s Eastern Ports.
The project is being implemented through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) under the Federal Government’s broader Eastern Ports modernisation programme.
China Harbour Engineering to Execute Project
The NPA confirmed that the Escravos Channel project is among about six projects recently awarded under the Eastern Ports modernisation programme.
According to Ikechukwu Oyenmakara, General Manager of Corporate and Strategic Communication at the NPA, the projects were awarded to China Harbour Engineering.
The rehabilitation is expected to address longstanding challenges affecting maritime operations at Warri Port.
Shallow Channel Has Affected Ship Operations
The Escravos Channel has faced persistent navigational challenges because of its shallow draught.
Vessels calling at Warri Port have reportedly become increasingly cautious about navigating the channel, with some ships running aground because of inadequate depth.
Local ship pilots have also raised concerns over the recurring grounding incidents, saying the condition of the channel has made navigation increasingly difficult and risky.
Boost for Eastern Ports
The rehabilitation of the Escravos Channel is expected to improve access to Warri Port and strengthen the capacity of Nigeria’s Eastern Ports to handle maritime traffic.
A more reliable navigation channel could also reduce delays and operational risks for shipping companies while improving the attractiveness of the port to importers, exporters and investors.
