The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Enugu State chapter, has dismissed reports that one of its prominent leaders, Dr SKC Ogbonnia, has been suspended from the party.
The state chairman, Dr Johnpaul Anih, described the purported suspension as invalid, insisting that Ogbonnia remains a bona fide member and respected leader of the NDC.
‘Ogbonnia has neither been suspended nor expelled’
In a statement, Anih said Ogbonnia had neither been suspended nor expelled from the party and accused those behind the reported action of attempting to create confusion within the NDC.
He maintained that Ogbonnia had not been found guilty of any offence against the party and had not engaged in any anti-party activity that would warrant disciplinary action.
NDC questions authority behind alleged suspension
The Enugu chairman also questioned the authority of the individuals or group reportedly responsible for announcing the suspension.
According to Anih, the NDC Constitution requires disciplinary matters to be handled by properly constituted party organs.
He asked whether a competent party organ had convened to consider any alleged offence, whether a formal charge had been issued and whether Ogbonnia had been given an opportunity to defend himself.
Anih said none of these procedures had taken place.
“Where is the resolution of the competent party organ? Where is the disciplinary process? Where is the notice of hearing?”
‘Political theatre’
The NDC chairman described the purported suspension as “political theatre”, saying the Enugu State chapter would not recognise decisions allegedly taken by individuals or groups outside the party’s constitutionally recognised structures.
He stressed that being a member of the NDC does not automatically give an individual the authority to suspend another member.
According to him, disciplinary powers can only be exercised through the appropriate party organs and established procedures.
Party says it is focused on elections
Anih said the legitimate leadership of the NDC in Enugu was focused on strengthening the party’s structures, mobilising members and preparing for forthcoming elections.
He reaffirmed Ogbonnia’s position within the party, describing him as “a bona fide member and a cherished leader” of the NDC.
The controversy comes as political parties across Nigeria intensify internal mobilisation and preparations ahead of forthcoming elections.
