Former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Kabiru Mijinyawa, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing concerns over the conduct of the party’s recent primary election.
Mijinyawa, who currently represents Yola South Constituency in the state assembly, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Adarawo in Yola South Local Government Area.
The former Speaker said the decision was prompted by what he described as a lack of fairness, transparency and credibility in the party’s internal electoral process.
Mijinyawa had contested the APC primary for the House of Representatives seat but lost to former Rural Electrification Agency chief executive, Ahmad Salihijo. He subsequently questioned the manner in which the primary was conducted.
In his resignation letter, the lawmaker said he could no longer remain associated with a process he considered inconsistent with democratic principles.
He also expressed concern about what he described as inadequate internal democracy within the party, stressing that fairness, accountability and transparency should guide political participation.
Mijinyawa’s departure comes amid growing disagreements within the APC in Adamawa State, with several prominent members leaving the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
He has reportedly joined the Action Peoples Movement (APM), a development that could further strengthen the party’s presence in the state.
His exit also follows the recent defection of former APC governorship aspirant Abdulrahman Haske to the APM, while other party members have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome of recent primaries.
The series of defections has raised questions about the APC’s internal cohesion in Adamawa as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the APC has played down the impact of the departures, with the party’s state publicity secretary, Dogo Victor, describing the defections as “political tourism” and insisting that the party retains strong grassroots support.
Mijinyawa, who has served in the Adamawa State House of Assembly since 2011 and was Speaker between 2015 and 2019, remains one of the prominent political figures to have recently left the APC in the state.
His resignation is expected to further shape the political calculations in Adamawa as parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
