A final-year student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Oluwole Oluwaseun, has died at an off-campus residence in the Damico area of Ooni Layout.
Oluwaseun was a 500-level student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
The university said it received information about an emergency involving the student at about 1:30pm on Tuesday, September 15, 2026. Its Quick Response and Security Team immediately proceeded to the location, where officers from the ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force, Moore, Ile-Ife, also arrived.
The student was subsequently taken to the university’s Health Centre, where a medical doctor certified him dead.
The institution said relevant information and items recovered from the scene had been handed over to the police as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Osun State Police Command later described the incident as a suspected suicide. Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said preliminary information indicated that the student had hanged himself.
However, the university urged members of its community to avoid circulating unverified reports or speculation while the investigation remains ongoing.
University expresses concern
Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Simeon Bamire, expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, classmates and colleagues.
He also acknowledged the possible emotional impact of the incident on other members of the university community and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to student welfare.
The university encouraged students facing serious emotional distress, relationship difficulties, financial pressures or other personal challenges to seek assistance from trusted individuals and appropriate support services.
Bamire stressed that students should not feel they have to face overwhelming difficulties alone.
The university has also notified the relevant student affairs authorities to provide necessary follow-up and support to students affected by the tragedy.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding Oluwaseun’s death are ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further information as the inquiry progresses.
