The Taraba State Government has begun steps to extend the retirement age of eligible health workers in the state from 60 to 65 years.
The development follows the Federal Government’s policy extending the retirement age for certain health professionals, with the Taraba State Government now considering its adoption at the state level.
The proposed policy is expected to allow qualified health workers to remain in service for an additional five years, subject to the applicable conditions and formal approval.
The state government said the initiative is aimed at retaining experienced personnel within the health sector and strengthening the availability of skilled professionals across Taraba’s healthcare system.
The proposal is currently awaiting the assent of Governor Agbu Kefas before it can take effect in the state.
The move is expected to particularly affect experienced medical and healthcare personnel whose expertise could be retained within the public health system beyond the existing retirement age.
The proposed extension comes amid efforts by governments to address manpower challenges in the health sector and retain experienced professionals in public service.
Once the necessary approval is granted, relevant authorities are expected to provide details on the categories of health workers covered by the policy and how the new retirement arrangement will be implemented.
For now, the proposed 65-year retirement age remains subject to the governor’s assent.
