The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of ranked and approved textbooks for use in Nigerian schools between 2026 and 2028.
The release follows the completion of the first phase of the Federal Government’s national textbook ranking exercise.
The first phase covers textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1).
A major feature of the new approval system is the introduction of unique Ranking/QR Tracking Codes for every approved textbook. The codes are provided alongside information such as the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
According to the Ministry, the QR-based system is intended to make it easier to identify and monitor approved instructional materials while strengthening transparency and accountability in their selection, procurement and use.
The exercise was conducted under the guidance of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list approved by the Minister of Education.
The Ministry explained that the additional process of generating and assigning unique tracking codes contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final lists.
The national textbook ranking exercise is being implemented in phases. Following the completion of the first phase, preparations will begin for the second phase, which will cover Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS2 and SS2. The same tracking and identification system will be applied to textbooks covered by the next phase.
The Federal Government has directed publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders to consult the official approved list before selecting or purchasing textbooks for the affected classes.
The Ministry said the exercise is aimed at ensuring that teachers and pupils have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned instructional materials, while improving accountability in the provision of textbooks across the country.
Stakeholders have consequently been advised to adhere to the approved titles and use the official list when procuring textbooks for the specified classes.
The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks list, including the unique QR tracking code assigned to each approved title, has been made available by the Federal Ministry of Education.
