Residents of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State have reportedly begun leaving their communities as repeated attacks by suspected bandits continue to raise concerns over their safety.
The development has increased anxiety among residents, with some families reportedly relocating to safer areas following persistent attacks and the activities of armed groups in parts of the local government.
Borgu, which shares a border with Kebbi State and is close to the Benin Republic border, has faced growing security concerns in recent times. Residents say the continued attacks have disrupted normal activities and made it increasingly difficult for communities to remain in their homes.
Some residents have also questioned the effectiveness of existing security measures, particularly the strategies being deployed to protect rural communities and prevent armed groups from operating freely.
The situation has reportedly affected farming activities, with residents concerned about travelling to their farms due to the risk of encountering armed groups.
Community members are calling for stronger and more sustained security operations, including increased deployment of security personnel to vulnerable locations and improved intelligence gathering.
Residents have also urged the government to address the factors enabling criminal groups to operate in remote areas, stressing that occasional security operations may not be sufficient to restore confidence among affected communities.
The latest concerns come amid broader security challenges across parts of Niger State, where attacks, abductions and other criminal activities have continued to affect several communities.
The displacement of residents could further worsen the humanitarian and economic impact of the insecurity, particularly for families who depend on farming and other local activities for their livelihoods.
Residents are therefore appealing to the state and Federal Governments to intensify efforts to protect communities, restore security and create conditions that will allow displaced families to safely return to their homes.
