The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has insisted that Governor Hope Uzodimma remains its candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, despite a Federal High Court judgment recognizing former governor Rochas Okorocha as the winner of the party’s senatorial primary.

The party maintained its position on Thursday, October 29, following the court’s decision in Abuja, which ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Okorocha as the APC candidate for the district.

In a statement issued by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Onwuasoanya FCC Jones, the APC argued that Uzodimma won the senatorial primary with overwhelming support from party members.

The party said its position remained unchanged, maintaining that the governor was the legitimate winner of the primary conducted on May 18, 2026.

“The party’s legal department shall study the outcome of a legal intervention in this matter and act accordingly,” the statement said.

Court Recognizes Okorocha as APC Candidate

The dispute followed a legal challenge instituted by Okorocha, who contested the recognition of Uzodimma as the party’s candidate for the Imo West Senate seat.

In its ruling, the Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, held that the evidence before it established that Okorocha won the party’s primary.

The court subsequently directed INEC to publish Okorocha’s name as the APC candidate for the January 16, 2027 senatorial election and ordered Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the party’s candidate for the contest.

The ruling represents a significant development in the political contest for Imo West, where the two prominent politicians have been at the centre of a dispute over the APC ticket.

APC Urges Members to Remain Focused

Despite the judgment, the Imo APC urged its members and supporters not to be distracted by the legal dispute.

The party called on them to remain committed to its political activities and preparations for the 2027 elections across the state.

It also indicated that it would review the court’s decision before determining its next legal steps.

The disagreement leaves the party’s position at odds with the court’s ruling, with further legal developments likely to shape the final outcome of the contest.

For now, the APC leadership in Imo continues to back Uzodimma, while the court has ordered electoral authorities to recognize Okorocha as the party’s candidate for Imo West.
