A viral confrontation between police officers and a zobo seller in Delta State has sparked widespread debate after officers demanded a NAFDAC registration number for the locally made drink.

The incident, captured on video, shows officers questioning the woman about the bottled zobo she was selling. One officer insisted that the product should carry a NAFDAC number, prompting a heated exchange with a man recording the encounter.

The content creator challenged the officers’ demand, questioning why they were spending so much time questioning the seller over what he described as ordinary zobo. The disagreement quickly attracted attention online, with Nigerians divided over food safety regulations and the role of the police in enforcing them.

NAFDAC CLARIFIES ITS POSITION

In response to the controversy, NAFDAC spokesperson Christiana Obiazikwor explained that the agency’s requirements depend on how the drink is presented for sale.

According to her, zobo sold in ordinary containers without packaging, sealing or labelling does not fall under the agency’s registration requirements. However, once the drink is packaged, sealed and labelled as a product for sale, it falls under NAFDAC regulation and is expected to meet the relevant requirements.

Meanwhile, Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe defended the officers, maintaining that they were carrying out their duties by questioning the seller about the product’s compliance.

The clarification has shifted the conversation from the confrontation itself to a wider question: how can authorities protect consumers without unnecessarily burdening small-scale traders?

Zobo remains one of Nigeria’s most popular locally prepared drinks, sold by roadside vendors and small businesses across the country. The incident highlights the importance of understanding food safety rules, particularly for entrepreneurs who package and sell homemade beverages.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Were the officers right to question the seller, or should the matter have been handled by NAFDAC officials? And should small businesses receive more education about registration requirements before enforcement action is taken?
