Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has made history after being confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first Nigerian to hold the position since the organization was established in 1957.
The confirmation, announced on Thursday, marks a major milestone for Nigeria’s representation in African football administration and places Adamu at the centre of the continent’s football governing body.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) welcomed the development, expressing confidence in Adamu’s ability to perform his new responsibilities and represent Nigeria positively on the continental stage.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, described the appointment as encouraging news for Nigerian football and pledged the federation’s support for Adamu in his new role.
Ikpeme said he was confident that the administrator would make both Nigeria and Africa proud, adding that the NFF was delighted with his confirmation.
From CAF Competitions Director to Top Administrative Position
Adamu previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions before becoming Director of Tournaments and Events, positions that gave him considerable experience in organizing major football competitions across Africa.
He was appointed acting General Secretary on 29 March 2026 following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator.
His confirmation now gives him substantive responsibility for the organization’s day-to-day administration, including coordinating operational activities, handling administrative and legal matters, and implementing decisions taken by CAF’s executive leadership.
CAF, headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, oversees football across the continent and organizes major competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the CAF Champions League.
A Career Built Around Football Administration
Adamu holds a FIFA Master’s degree in the management, law and humanities of sport.
He began building his profile in football administration in the early 2010s through the establishment of the Copa Lagos beach soccer tournament, which helped expand the visibility of beach soccer in Nigeria.
His subsequent roles within CAF strengthened his experience in tournament planning and the administration of continental competitions.
His elevation is expected to increase Nigeria’s visibility within the structures responsible for managing African football, although the extent of that influence will depend on the responsibilities he undertakes and the decisions made by CAF’s leadership.
What His Appointment Means for Nigeria
Adamu’s confirmation represents a significant achievement for Nigerian sports administration, placing a Nigerian in one of the most influential administrative positions in African football.
The appointment also presents an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its engagement with CAF on matters concerning competition organization, football development and the broader administration of the game.
However, his position is an administrative one and does not automatically guarantee preferential treatment for Nigerian teams or clubs.
For now, Adamu’s immediate challenge will be to manage CAF’s operations effectively and support the organization’s efforts to develop football across its 54 member associations.
His confirmation marks a historic chapter for Nigeria, with expectations high that his experience and knowledge of the game will contribute to the continued growth of African football.
