The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has reportedly shut down Sokoto State University over unpaid allowances and other outstanding financial entitlements, raising fresh concerns about a possible disruption of activities at the institution.

The development comes amid growing tension between university workers and authorities over the implementation of salary agreements, outstanding arrears and staff welfare.

SSANU has repeatedly criticised delays in settling workers’ entitlements, warning that continued failure to meet its demands could trigger prolonged industrial action across the university system.

The union has also called for the full payment of outstanding allowances and the implementation of agreements reached with university workers, insisting that its members should not be excluded from benefits approved for other categories of staff.

In a separate nationwide dispute, SSANU had threatened an indefinite strike over unpaid arrears and incomplete implementation of its agreement with the Federal Government. Although the government released eight months’ salary arrears in October 2026, the union maintained that other outstanding obligations remained unresolved.

The situation at Sokoto State University highlights the continuing challenges facing Nigeria’s university system, where disputes over funding, workers’ welfare and unpaid entitlements have repeatedly threatened industrial harmony.

Students and other members of the university community could face further disruption if the dispute is not resolved.

Note: The specific details of the reported shutdown at Sokoto State University could not be independently confirmed from the available reports.
